The App to Get "Dressed" Like Cher Horowitz

Friday, April 10, 2015

Bringing an old favorite post out of the archives today for people asking how in the hell we keep tabs of our wardrobe, for those of you who have seen it, we hope you find something new + helpful! For that of you who haven't we hope you love it! - June

As a child of the 90s and a lover of all cheesy teen movies, I'm one of those people that could watch the movie Clueless or listen to the Mighty Mighty Bosstones on the soundtrack over + over again.  The movie is made better by the fact that it's based on Jane Austen's novel Emma.. and who doesn't love a little bit of Jane Austen?  Also, who doesn't relate to Cher's feelings in the beginning of the movie when she was trying to get ready and looked like the photo below... seriously... this is me every morning.

via
Part of the magnetic appeal of the movie, of course, is the fashion, whether you're admiring it or just staring at it thinking "WHAT IS THAT?!" it apparently warrants a revival, because it seems to be popping up a-l-o-t this year, for example,  Pinup Girl Clothing's Totally Clueless Lookbook.  While I never envied any of leading lady, Cher Horowitz's wardrobe pieces directly (although I did, in fact, own a pink feather pen)... I had an INCREDIBLY deep-seeded desire to be able to do this:

Well guess what ladies: it's 2015 (now) and I'm here to tell you that you FINALLY CAN and holy shit, every part of my neurotic perfectionism is overjoyed.  Meet the Dressed app.  Let me start by saying that I have no idea who these people are, we have no affiliation with the app, the makers of the app  and we don't even know anyone else that USES the app.  I hunted it down in the App store when trying to find ways to organize my closet.  Also, in the approximate 6+ years I've owned an iPhone.. I've bought MAYBE 6 apps, so I saw that this one was $3.99 and I was NOT about to buy it. But I did, and I'm glad.

Wardrobe

My husband, Collin, and I were discussing a system for me to start cleaning out my closet.  So, I started the process by inputting my dresses thinking "yeah... ok... this is KIND of cool" but when everything is shoved close together in your closet and all the sudden, you have a way to see everything perfectly laid out, the "cool" gets upgraded to "pretty f*cking awesome".

As you input each item, it allows you to enter a myriad of information including the type, brand, date you bought it and it even allows you to input every date you wear it.  Basically, if in 3 months you wanna know what you have and haven't worn so you can clean out your closet with ease, all you'd have to do is "filter" your wardrobe by "date worn".  I'm not going to lie to you guys, it's time consuming and I'm STILL working on imputing my closet and probably will be for a while. But here's a little peek my progress so far.

Dressing Room

Once you've spent the time to input your wardrobe (or even some of your wardrobe) you can take a creepy little illustrated lady that sort of looks like the mannequins from the first episode of the new gen. Doctor Who and dress her using your various pieces to give a rough indication of what an outfit might look like.

Overall, I've had a really good time playing around with this app and knew I had to share it with y'all.  If you download it, let me know, I'd be curious to see how others like it!

*** I just noticed the app is on sale for $1.99! Go get it ladies!

How many of you would spend the time to use an app like this?
Have I managed to convert anyone? haha

  2. This is amazing! I cannot tell you how many times I get dressed, undressed & redressed in the morning trying to find the right outfit for any particular day. It's so time consuming, and this might just save me from that so I can sleep in a little longer each morning! Also, who doesn't want Cher's totally awesome closet computer? :) (PS--everytime I see the word "myriad," I think of "Heathers" so this post has TWO amazing 80's/90's movies in it for me! haha)

  4. I have this app, and love it, but the fact that it won't let me layer tops makes me INSANE. I think I will have to move things like cardigans to the outerwear category to make layering work. It is so time-consuming though! Especially when your item blends with the background and you have to erase the background by hand.

I have a comparable app except on Android. I use it for my 4 month old! It's hard keeping up with what she already has and what she will need so this is PERF.

  7. I also use stylitics.com.

  8. Which Android app are you using?

  9. This is amazing! I've always envied Cher's virtual wardrobe programme, and this looks like the next best thing! :)

  10. Hi Vienna - Kara from
Dressed. So happy you love the app!! I just wanted to let you know this is a
feature that we are definitely going to add! I also moved my cardigans to
outerwear, and am pushing for multiple items from the same category to happen
pronto! One other tip - try downloading product shots from retailers websites
(or try googling the item). Retailers usually have really well lit shots that
are super easy to import. Aside from my vintage, I was able to import about
half my closet from the comfort of my sofa - WIN. Be sure to let us know other
features you want to see and you can email me anytime with questions
    (kara@dressedapp.net).

  11. Omg! That'd be awesome. I moved my cardigans to outerwear already. I do also have lower cut tops that I'd like to layer with other tops, so this would totally help!

  12. I love love love this app. It really does take forever to upload my clothes. I don't have many items that I can find stock photos of. I did take a whole bunch of photos of my clothes when I first started, but it didn't translate well into the Dressed app because they weren't worn photos, so sadly I couldn't upload most of them. Another thing that's annoying though is when you find a stock photo of a piece of clothing, but the model has her hair or hand over the clothes.
The app really is exciting and helpful though!
I love how you compared it to Cher's closet. I immediately knew you were talking about her electronic closet and the app when I read the post title.

MyDressing. It doesn't have the dressing room feature but I only have the free version.

  15. Hey Haley - Alex from MyDressing, I'm glad to see you mentioning the app here. At this point, there is no "paid version", almost everything is free. Feel free to give us your feedbacks at https://mydressing.uservoice.com/.

This Dressing room feature seems really good. I don't have an iphone, so I can't try it but it deserves. Why not such a feature on MyDressing ? :)

  19. It's such a fun app, but I agree it does take forever to upload all of my clothes!

I also hate when there was a purse or hand over the dress! It definitely takes a lot of effort, but it's well worth it!

haha Of course, Clueless is forever a favorite!

  22. I do the same exact thing! I get undressed to get redressed to get dressed AGAIN. It's so frustrating! This will definitely help me stop doing that. I love that you were able to associate the post with Clueless and Heathers! Both great movies!

  25. Oh trust me, I'm borrowing a dress form just to put in all the clothing I can't find photos of online and for my vintage! haha

  26. Hahaha when I wrote it I was thinking the same thing - forever trying to squeeze as many teen movies in as possible.

  27. After seeing your original blog on this app, I downloaded it too. It's the best £1.79 i've ever spent in my life! I've barely added any of my clothes to it, but i've had so much fun playing around with it so far!

    Thanks for the recommendations! :)

  29. what a great app, but it would require photographing all of your clothes if you shop secondhand, as is my case. a great time investment
